Hello Paul,

You can solve this problem by using Cocktail to rebuild the launch services
database. (I don't remember the exact menu command, but it's one of the System
options). You may get entries for older versions of apps to "open with" if you
have mounted cloned drives of your earlier systems. I believe the system finds
those applications and adds them to the applications that you can "open with".

Cocktail is a maintenance software that is $19 for a single users license
(currently it's $14). You can also fix this by running the free OnyX
maintenance software by Titanium software. And I think that TinkerTool, another
free application that gives you access to more system preferences through the
GUI -- not strictly maintenance, may also handle this, but I'm not certain. Be
very careful to always use the maintenance software version for your specific
operating system version (e.g., 10.8, 10.7, 10.6, etc.). This is one of those
instances where using the MacUpdate pages to find software can be much easier
than going to the developers site, where finding the correct version can
require navigating through several pages. However, this still doesn't do any
good unless you read and check the links before you download (e.g. bring up the
links chooser with VO-U, then type "d o w n" to check the download links.
"Download now" will be for the current version 10.8, "Download older
version" refers to 10.7, and even older versions will be labeled "Download
for Mac OS X 10.6", etc.)

Here's the macupdate page for OnyX:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx

And here's the macupdate page for Cocktail:

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
