Hello Josh, You need a scanner or a very good camera for ABBYY FineReader or any other OCR program for the Mac unless you're getting image PDFs that need OCR.
If you're looking for an OCR app for the iPhone, I'd strongly recommend Prizmo or Perfect OCR although other people also recommend Text Detective. With any of these, your biggest problem is making sure there's enough light and holding the iPhone as still as possible when taking the picture.
