Thanks for your help. I also noticed some strange things happening when I used Control F7. As you say, it sometimes appears to tab you to the next control. Anyway, deleting the preferences file appears to have fixed things.
And to answer your question, about VoiceOver reading message content vs. header, what I meant was that when I opened a message (using Command o), sometimes the text of the message would be in the Voiceover cursor, and the message would star reading, but other times the cursor would be on what Voiceover calls the "headers group" (name, subject, date) and I'd have to move down to the text area to start reading. Again, this problem seems to have vanished -- every message I open now is opening with the cursor on the message text and reading automatically. Fingers crossed.
