I downloaded a free app called Red Laser with my iPhone.
This is a QR code scanner, and it reads these squiggly symbols that give

information, and can take you to a web site.
I tried it on a tube of tooth paste, and it not only told me what it is,
but
it gave me pricing for my area.
I'm not sure if it also reads barcodes, but it is a very accessible app.
