Personally I would try first of all to put Voiceover verbosity to low to see if that resolves the problem. If that does you should, I think, be able to reproduce this in an activity. If this does not work I guess I would try muting speech in fine reader as a definite way of shutting it up, but have a toggle command set up in key commander to toggle speech on and off in Voiceover so you can retain speech feedback in Fine Reader when you need it. I know that you can turn off speech in activity settings for definite. You have to be careful to distinguish muting the system and turning speech off in activity settings as these are two separate things. It is just worth experimenting with. What you want is Voiceover to remain muted within the fine Reader window whilst you are not in it, but speaking elsewhere.
