Okay, here's what I do.

I have thousands of tracks in my iTunes library but I don't want to hear them 
all, only my "Favourite Tracks" are what's required on my iPod or other IOS 
devices.

I made a "Smart Playlist" which monitors what I play, for example if I've heard 
a song more than once then this is added to the playlist, the assumption here 
of course is that if the track has been played more than once then I most 
likely want to hear that track again.
