It probably can, but it will try and make you use disk utility. I really don't' like this method as for me its way too complex. I use lion disk maker which is a free app that can do this and does do this well.
You will need at most an 8 gig flash drive, for now. We'll see about mavrics when that comes out as I plan on upgrading that same 8 gig flash drive I have. I believe you can find Lion Disk Maker at http://macupdate.com The program is dead simple to use and takes about 40 minutes to make the bootable key. at least for me. lol! Good luck.
