Assuming you are running Lion or Mountain Lion, one way to accomplish this is
to use Mail's Favorites Bar. Mailbox Aliases that are placed in the Favorites
Bar can be directly accessed by pressing Command+ a corresponding number. Here
are the steps to follow.

1. Toggle on the Favorites Bar either through the View menu or by pressing
Command+Shift+Option+H.
2. Interact with the Favorites Bar and navigate through it to see if the
desired mailbox is already there. If it is there, skip ahead to item 4 below.
3. If the desired mailbox is not present in the Favorites Bar, use drag and
drop to copy an alias of the desired mailbox from the Mailbox list onto the
Favorites Bar. For this task I've had better luck using the "mouse down, mouse
up" method of drag and drop rather than the VO+, VO+. method.
4. Once the desired mailbox is present in your Favorites Bar, you can press
Command+the corresponding number for the desired mailbox, where the mailboxes
are numbered from 1 through 9 from left to right. This shortcut key will work
even if the Favorites Bar is hidden.
