Hello Eleanor. Go into preferences in the apple menu. Choose the keyboard button. When in there select the keyboard tab and go over to where it says use all f1,f2, etc as as standard function keys.checkbox and check it. if it is unchecked it just means that you have to use the function key to the left of the control key to do the secondary operations for the function keys. When it is checked you use the function key to use the function keys for the operations that are shown on the keys themselves. Hope this helps.
