When I do that, I get a list of all of the bookmarks: over 700 of them. How
do I just list the bookmarks on the bar?

Hello.
go to the book marks manager with cmd option b and go to the bookmarks bar
table. Now expand it and remove any book marks you don't want in the book
marks bar.This is how I've done it since snow lepherd and it appears to
work in mavericks.
