The safari reader actually stripps out the adds and junk on the page to make it easier to, well, read. I have never relyed on the off line safari reader as I have had articles disappear on me even on my ios device where they are supsoed to be synced as well.
I think this question was asked on the list a few years ago but I don't think the person ever got an answer. Btw do you mean the safari reader you accessed with cmd shift r? Take care.
