Hi Judy, I recently updated a podcast I did showing how to digitize vinyl records using Amadeus Pro. the procedure for doing cassettes is essentially the same. I also digitized such recordings including my Grand father born in 1917 singing all kinds of songs that made it to the New York Canadian border. these types of recordings are precious to our families. You can find the podcast on applevis.com.
You can use a USB tape deck or in my case I just used the earphone out on a reliable old deck. It worked well enough for my needs. You will probably need to buy a griffin imic if you go that rout as it will let you input the sound through the imic directly thrugh a usb connector into your mac. I'm pretty sure I touch on this in the podcast.
