There are a few ways, but this is probably easiest. 1. In Finder, press command-shift-a to open your Application folder. 2. Hit the letter, t, to jump down to Text Edit. If this doesn't work, you might have to navigate down to it. 3. In Mountain Lion, press command-shift-t to add Text Edit to the Dock.
