Many thanks for your reply.

At the moment, I do not have any IDevices although I might purchase an
IPhone in the near future.  I wonder which is the best way to back up my Mac
bearing this in mind?  Should I use the ICloud or purchase an external drive
etc.

Well there are no podcasts to speak of, but all you do is sign in and choose
what yu want backed up and hit back up now for the first tiem and let it do
its thing.
