The editor being used is probably vi, since that is the editor by default. 
Ctrl-x is not exit. VI is a pain to use if you don't know how to get around in 
it. you need to change your editor to nano or pico, same editor. You can do 
this by typing 
export _ = /usr/bin/pico
This will use poco instead of vi, which will make things work better.
