Since a few people asked about downgrading, I thought I test it out since I 
already had the iOS 7.1.2 file downloaded from when I was Beta testing iOS 
8. I wanted to be prepared to downgrade in case it was necessary. Since I 
was also contemplating doing a new install of iOS 8 (mine has been just 
updated repeatedly all the way back from Beta 1 in June) I thought why not 
see if downgrading to iOS 7.1.2 still works before I upgrade to iOS 8.



So, I connected my phone, did a sync and an encrypted backup and then went 
to the Restore button in the device section and pressed Shift+Enter (I am 
using a Windows 7 laptop). I browsed to where I saved the IPSW file (Apple 
Software Update File) and selected it. I was told my phone would be restored 
to version 7.1.2, it then went through the steps and 10 minutes later I was 
done and iOS 7.1.2 was back on my device. I turned Voiceover with a triple 
click of the home button, went through the initial setup screens and I am 
now sitting here with a factory restored iOS 7.1.2 installation on my phone.



I thought I mention this for anybody who might be just too unhappy with the 
bugs in iOS 8 and prefers the familiar. It is now Sunday, September 21 at 
1:30 PM Pacific time so about 4 days after the public release of iOS 8 (100 
hours to be exact) and it appears that Apple is still allowing downgrading. 
I can’t say if this will still work tomorrow and, if it does, whether it 
will still work on Tuessday and so on. I am now going to upgrade back to iOS 
8 since while I don’t like some of the bugs I do at the same time like some 
of the new features and the latter outweighs the prior. I will not try to 
downgrade again in a few days just to see if it works, it’s up to everybody 
to decide and do what they feel they must.



If you do want to go back to iOS 7.1.2, you can download the software from 
www.IPSWDownloader.com. There are 3 combo boxes where you select your 
device, your device model and the firmware. Make sure you know exactly which 
model of iPhone or iPad or whatever you have since you will need to know. I 
have a GSM iPhone 5S which is version A1533, but if you are on Sprint or 
Verizon it might be a different model, I am not exactly sure which carrier 
uses which model in the States as I am in Canada. I am pretty sure that an 
AT&T iPhone 5S is also model A1533. You can find out either by getting 
somebody to look at the baclk of yourt device, the model number is engraved 
there. If you want to find out by yourself go to Settings, General and 
About. Note down the last 3 or 4 digits/characters of your phone’s serial 
number. Now go to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup and type the 
last 3 characters of the serial number in the edit field, then find the 
results and the model number will be listed there. If it doesn’t work with 3 
characters try it with 4. The model numbers all start with a letter followed 
by 4 numbers, e.g. A1533.



Once you have located the correct IPSW file to download, save it do your 
Downloads folder or wherever you can find it again. When the download is 
done (iOS 7.1.2 is almost 1.5 Gb) you have to extract it by right clicking 
on it and select “Extract All”. In the folder which will show up you will 
find the actual IPSW file which is called as follows:



iPhone6,1_7.1.2_11D257_Restore.IPSW



You won’t of course see the extension since most likely you will have “Hide 
extensions for known file types” set to On.



Anyhow, now connect your phone to iTunes, go to Restore and press 
Shift+Enter on it. In the open dialogue, browse to the IPSW file and open 
it, from there everything will proceed as normal.



If you have done a backup under iOS 8 I can’t guaranty that it will restore 
perfectly, I would probably recommend to set up as a new phone and start 
from scratch,.
