Hello all

Now that we’re mostly all running Yosemite, I’d just like to make this
procedure a little more public. I cannot take all of the credit for it, but
nevertheless, I wanted to pass it along.

There are a couple of ways you can create install media for OS X under
Yosemite. I believe that the Terminal command sequence I’m about to give you
below is probably what’s used by the free “DiskMakerx” application. Obviously,
therefore, you can use that app if you just want to get the job done and aren’t
interested in the learning process. The data you enter into DiskMakerX is used
in the same way as this command will give you it.

Yu may also install using Disk Utility by locating and restoring the disk image
within the installer to a thumb drive, but that process is a little bit more
complex than doing it this way.

If you’re like me, and you like to know how things work, then you might want to
delve into the Terminal, and use this process instead.

Firstly, you’ll need to make sure that you have the following prerequisites
available:

• An 8GB or higher capacity USB thumb drive which you are happy to erase. It
must be capable of USB2.0 or later.

• A copy of the Yosemite master install disk which you download from Apple.
Warning: When you originally download the installer, it deletes itself once
the installation of Yosemite is complete. So make sure you have a backup copy,
or one is available. I can help you there if you need one, but you must, of
course, have a qualifying computer. I am going to put the installer up on my
personal cloud, but can give you a link to it if you need it.

Assuming that you have the installer, move/copy it to your /applications folder.

Format your USB thumb drive as an OS X Journaled drive and give it a name like,
in the below example, Yosemite.

Now, we will use the small Unix utility which Apple very kindly provided in
their Mavericks and Yosemite installer. This is called, for the benefit of the
curious, “CreateInstallMedia”.

• With your thumb drive pre-prepared, Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
and type/copy&paste the following command:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\
Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Yosemite
--applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app —nointeraction

You’ll be prompted for your administrative password so enter it and hit Enter.
Then, be patient until the Terminal session shows the “Done” message. At that
point, you can remove and securely store your new Yosemite install disk for
future use on any qualifying Mac.

That will save you having to download the installer from the Internet each time
you need to reinstall your system or when you want to build a new one.

You may also want to create a Recovery thumb drive as well so that you have
that option available. I shall place both files, (the main installer and also
the recovery disk assistant) in my personal cloud.

I hope somebody somewhere finds the above of some use.

Gordon
