Matthew - I did not indicate that Facebook is trying to sell me something via text message. I simply said they are spamming me.
When they politely ask you to add a number, they do it under the deceptive pretense that it's for your own security. The reality is that they want to inundate you with every status update and photo album post. And they tell you that it is easy to stop all this. I think one of the first messages they send is the helpful missive that you can reply with "stop" and they will cease. This may not work. While it may be possible to control the verbosity of SMS messages Facebook choses to spew just because one adds a phone number, I think the process is deceptive. I have grown tired of trying to find just the right setting to stop even the emails and have no confidence I will be able to disable the text messages. So I think the best solution is to simply remove the mobile number I added under the assumption that it would add some security to my account. The reason I warned you about this is that I thought you had not yet found a way to respond to the confirmation.
