1. Open Safari.
2. Press command comma to open Safari preferences.
3. Go to the General tab and then VO space on that.
4. Navigate down until you hear 
Open “safe” files after downloading checked checkbox
Press vo space on that to clear the checkbox and then command W to close the 
preferences pane.

if you listen to the Podcast I did on using Vlc as a Radio Player you will hear 
in that how to change filetype associations so that files will play in VLC.
