Videotron is far from being a fishy or dubious agency. Along with
Cogeco, Videotron serves the Quebec territory (and Alberta, IIRC)
with both cable and internet service (soon to offer local, LD and
VoIP telephony ) and is a member of CableLabs consortium
(www.cablelabs.com)
Just like any other high-speed provider they offer you the choice of
modem rental or purchase; rebates applicable if you use another of
their products like cable TV. I purchased the Samsung model
(SCM-110R) while 2 other friends got a Motorola model. The important
thing is that the modem is DOCSIS compliant. Keep in mind that while
any DOCSIS cable modem *may* work, you're stuck with used equipment
which you'll have to replace at your expense if it fails. I doubt you
can obtain a new cable modem for less than 159$.
The only complaint I have with Videotron's high-speed service is they
throttle-down the upload rate (128K) and the 6 GB data (1 up, 5 down)
limit. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with the service.

Cheers,
Frank
