I just upgraded to 10.1 from 10.0.4 and I'm enjoying the speed INCREASE.
I know it's still slower than OS9 at its speediest, but when you include
freezes in OS9, when one application takes over the entire machine, I
think 10.1 is doing pretty well.

That's not to say there's no room for improvement. The big memory hog
seems to be window drawing/redrawing. Major hunks of memory are being
used to keep track of where each pretty pixel and dropshadow are, so
they will look nice when I (slowly) move one window around the screen.

I expect two things will speed up OS X:
  - future improvements to memory management and Quartz rendering
  - ever-faster and more powerful hardware

I guess we'll see.
