Where did you see that info? I can't find anything that officially states that mac.com email accounts will continue to be free. In fact, everything that I've found on Apple's website indicates the opposite.
I have heard rumors stating that Apple is considering allowing people to keep their email accounts, but have seen nothing from Apple on the subject.
