It's interesting trying to quantify that, because there's so many factors. All in all, there some speed losses in the System area, but the multitasking that I can do, and the speed improvements in the applications more than makes up for it. If you want more info, just keep reading, but people who get bored with details should stop now... 1) Opening windows is the main slowdown - compared to OS 9 it seems real slooow. In reality, I hardly notice it anymore. I've hacked the system a bit to speed windows up a bit, and that helps. Tried the hack to make quartz extreme work over the PCI bus, but that had little effect, probably because I have so much USB stuff hooked up. 2) On the other hand, GraphicConvertor works at 2x, maybe 3x the speed it does in OS 9 when I'm doing a batch process. Other apps show similar improvement. 3) Burning CD's I'm limited to the speed of the USB 1.1 bus, which means I can only get 4x out of my 16x burner. Handles that easily. 4) iTunes is much more usable since there's no drag on other apps. I used to keep MaCAST Lite on my OS 9 setup, just so I could listen to music while working. iTunes, and Soundjam before it, were too much of a burden on the CPU to use, except as a solo app. 5) The Internet, especially with Safari, is incredible. Browsers written for OS X - Safari, OmniWeb, Chimera - are far faster than their OS 9 counterparts, even on my slow old machine. 6) Streaming Internet is awesome. I still remember my amazement when I first hooked into a video stream and realized that I could move the Quicktime window around without the video stopping, or even stuttering. Not possible in OS 9 on this machine. Other apps? Well, iMovie is a pig in OS 9, and no different in X. iPhoto doesn't fit my needs, I use iView, which works at about the same speed (quickly) in either OS. Photoshop is a different case. They optimized so much code in v. 7, it's hard to tell where the speed improvements come from, but its certainly as fast as 6 in OS 9.
