It's quite an eye opener to travel to Europe where facility in several languages is the norm. People are proud of the fact that they can accommodate North Americans in the language of their choice, which is usually English. It is a shame that we can't get past the feeling that the English language is the be-all-and-end-all. This is a display of ignorance. Learning a second language is a intelligent skill.
A person doesn't know what "Je me souviens." means? Here's the answer: take more history and French classes.
And please, let's not get started on what is a waste of public funds.
