Friends have a PM 6500 whose hard drive is almost dead. On startup, or when being attempted by Norton's it gives a series of click-CLICK noises... the platters are spinning, the heads are trying to find data and then going to the park position repeatedly. In Canada this machine was sold with a Western Digital Caviar AC34000 4 GB drive.
They would like to recover data from this drive, but it's not worth the $$$ the pros would charge, so it's up to me (or down to me). My idea... since it seems to be an electro mechanical problem, would switching the control board allow it to spin up properly? If I get really desperate I would try switching platters...
If anyone has one of these drives they would like to sell, please contact me off list. Yes, I have looked on eBay both in Canada and the U.S.A. with no luck. It would have to be the exact same model, I believe.
Thanks,
Stan
