As for $500 for send and receive bits. You should be able to set yourself up
with a setup (for your laptop) for just over $250 CAD. You can get wireless
basestations often exceeding the functionality of the AirPort for <$100 (as
opposed to Apple's $300+ which has only *one* LAN port)... how Apple gets
away with overcharging by 100% is beyond me (or are there that many people
who use dial-up web access and have a need to waste paper (the USB printing
;)).

I'm not sure what new AirPort cards are down to but you can get one for the
iBook (doesn't take extreme) for <$120 and on the swap list they're going
for a lot less than that used.

PS When I was looking to buy my current Wireless router I put out a request
for a Netgear 814MR there were a few people who had one (people were buying
them b/c they were *that* cheap and then realising that they didn't really
want wireless after all).
