Bus error on start up

I have an iMac with OS 9.2.2 When I boot up I get an error message, 
bus error. I have discovered that I can circumvent the problem if 
boot up while zapping the PRAM (holding Can any one tell me how to 
fix it without having to zap the PRAM?
