I'm wanting to improve my French before we move back to Canada in July (I'm not counting the days, not at all!!! 138 days ;-) but I'm not in a position to take a university course here in England and the local community college offers only introduction to French (besides, I wouldn't trust their community colleges after I've seen the dismal state their secondary schools are in. Standardised testing is a _bad_ idea).
Anyway, that's not why I'm writing. I'd like to find out if anyone has a suggestion for computer- or distance ed-based learning of the French language. I took French up to OAC (grade 13) so I have some competency (I'd class myself as intermediate in the learning stage). Pronunciation is not an issue but my vocabulary is limited and I have problems understanding others if they start speaking quickly.
Has anyone had personal experience with any of the softwares out there that claim to help you develop your linguistic skills with French (e.g. Rosetta Stone) or with a distance learning programme (preferably based in Canada)? Some of them are pricey (500 CAD+) so I need to do a little research before diving in. I've tried the Rosetta Stone demo and been rather underwhelmed at the quality of a 300 USD piece of software (it still runs in Classic and the exercises seem a tad simplistic, even in the more advanced modules). The best way to learn a new language as an adult is naturally to be immersed in it whilst learning it but that is not likely to be an option any time soon so I need to find some half-decent alternative(s).
Many thanks for your thoughts in advance.
Sincerely, Eric
