I agree with Christian, looking at the xDSL situation from the other end of the line (we design and build Broadband Loop Carriers for the majority of the RBOCs/ILECs/CLECs in Canada, the US and abroad): we do a lot of interoperability testing with each of the available xDSL modems and see a lot of un-documented 'features' (sensitivity to line impairments, on/off-hook, losing sync, frequent re-training, you name it). In a sense, it is similar to what happened with V.92 when it came out: there is the standard, and there is reality, and not always do they correlate 100% (each implementation may and will be different). You need to get from your ISP/phone company the list of xDSL modems they are comfortable with (and they do have their preferred supplier), and go from there.

Naaahh... Just that depending on the region you're in, you might not have the luxury of having a smaller provider that lets you buy the modems! ;-) I have purchased a Speedstream DSL for my dedicated connection (my DSL provider in Montreal is B2B2C); I have sold and installed D-Link DSL modems at clients; I've also seen the G-Net DSL modems in a couple of locations, but it's not really well rated with local providers (some having experienced connection reliability issues). The D-Link DSL 300 is a decent unit. It will set you back about $150. Whatever you end up considering brand/model wise, please check with your DSL provider for compatibility: you don't want to end up buying something that won't work with your provider's equipment.
