My first post to this list.
I have an older 7300 w/ Os 8.6 - I use it mainly for gaming and word processing. Yesterday it hang, I tried everything i know about Mac troubleshooting, boot without extension, zap PRAM, rebuilt desktop (this help a bit and mount the whole desktop) but hang after that. The strangest thing I never saw that It even hang trying to boot from a > CD?

Well, when you are booting from the CD it still tries to mount the old HD. My guess is massive directory structure corruption. That's why a desktop rebuild helped a little bit. You need to see if you can boot off of the CD with the drive disconnected.

If even that doesn't work then you have perhaps a full system reset (reset CPU, zap PRAM a bunch of times (5?)). That might get it back, and it might be easier to try first.

Another alternative is that the CD or CD drive is independently also screwed up. Try booting from a floppy, and also cleaning the CD and drive.

Your description is kind of vague. When, exactly, does it fail to boot?
