Actually I haven't tried that part - they are still both hooked up.
I didn't try to press the regular buttons. How could it possibly
figure out what device it's supposed to be then?

Use your 'Apple System Profiler' and you'll see each that your Mac
hopefully 'sees' and talks to each separate device that is connected.
If you need more ports, get a powered USB hub.
As long as you have appropriate software to 'recognize' the 'keyboard
mapping' (for the numeric keypad (Compacq) ) or whatever of each
device, they should all work.
