Not exactly? Oftentimes, I was unable to login from my Macintosh when he was logged
on at his business via a PC, and not his Mac?

Evidentially
that ISP had a Macintosh sized security hole that
allowed multiple users to login on the same account.
When you connected via Windows it tripped their
security and denied you access, probably kicked your
friend off too.
