Must be slightly older than my S6E. The Vista name
was added to the S series when they came out with
the VistaScan software.

I was able to download that huge 3.55s file at
between 13-15K/second over a 56k dialup. That's
incredible for a modem and especially from an FTP
in Taiwan. Too bad the file is bad on the server. :(

I installed the version that UMAX USA says is the
one for the S6E, unfortunately Basilisk II's SCSI
communication isn't up to the task of running the
scanner. It got out of sync or something then tried
to shove the scanner head out the end of the scanner.
Didn't hurt it, I hit the power switch on the
scanner real fast. ;)

Which site did you get 3.55 from that's not a corrupt
file? The 3.75 I got in two parts from umax.de is
no good because some numbskull BinHexed the two
parts _after_ doing something that lost their resource
forks. :P No resource forks and Stuffit is too dumb
to piece the archive back together. I would actually
pay for a bit of shareware specifically designed
to crack open SEA and multipart SIT archives that
have lost their resource forks. The data is still
all there and compressed but Stuffit's programmers
are apparently too (words fail me) to figure out
a way to "bulletproof" the extraction functions.
I'd love to see RAR overtake SIT and ZIP as the
archive format of choice on Mac and Win. RAR does
not rely on resource forks staying intact, it has
slightly better compression in most cases and it
also can include recovery data in the archive to
reconstrut small corrupted parts. Just one bit flipped
wrong is enough to trash a SIT or ZIP beyond repair.
Wouldn't bother a RAR file with the lowest level
of recovery record in the archive. (But in most
RAR compression apps the user must select to use the
recovery record option.)

Yup, I tried GIMP Win32 once when my PhotoShop CD
got lost for a while. The user interface is absolutely
horrible! Everything is on a cascading menu off a
rightclick and there's options that should be grouped
together that are scattered off down different paths
of the menu.

I'm sure GIMP has been steadily improved since then
but I just asked someone on IRC about it the other
day and it still has the same @#%# user interface.

I'd be happy to contribute to The GIMP by charting
out the current list of menu options and functions
and re-arranging them into logically associated
groupings, but only if the ones working on it would
change to a frigging NORMAL menu system like most
other apps have. I wonder how much code in GIMP is
devoted to _not_ using the built in GUI functions
of every OS with a GUI for menus? :P

I gave up on programming years ago because to me it
was just too much like work. :P I'd love to be in
a position doing software _design_ so I could do
some part to try and weed out as much interface
idiocy and functional funkiness as possible. Of course
then I'd have to get the programmers to actually
go along with that. :P I've read a ton of gripes
about the Netscape 6/Mozilla interface on Bugzilla,
but the #$#^$^&$ programmers steadfastly refuse to
listen to how people hate their stupid changes.

Currently I'm beta testing a new bit of software
from a big computer peripheral company and it's a
prime candidate for "The Interface Hall of Shame".

hesitate to file scathing comments about it
including that URL. ;)
