I got my 7300/200 working again. :)

First I copied the System file, Finder and System
Resources files from the minimal 9.1 install on the
smaller drive to the main drive.

Then I made a CD with the 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updater disk
image files and OS9 Helper 1.0.1 on it. (Used Basilisk
II to put the stuff on an HFV image file then burned
it to CD-R with Nero Burning ROM.)

To access the CD I copied the CD/DVD extentions from
the fouled up 9.2.2 System Folder to the small drive.

I did a Core System files only custom install of the
9.2.1 update then did the 9.2.2 update, which allows
no customizing. (Like the 8.5>8.6 update.)

Rebooting from the bigger drive with 9.2.2 worked
just fine. (Of course this is without the D-Link NIC!)

Then I decided to update the USB extentions since
they weren't what was in the 9.2.x install tomes.

When I rebooted the System was corrupted again. Won't
boot with extentions disabled either. Grrr. Snarl.
Bleh. Have to do this all over again for the Nth time.

Why is the Mac OS so *fragile*? Seems like any poorly
written application, extention or control panel can
poke into the System files and foul them up. The only
time I've ever had as much core OS file trouble was
with Win95B, especially when it came to installing
USB support. It was all too common for KERNEL32.DLL
to get corrupted and require a reinstall since that
file was built during the install and is roughly
equivalent to the System file.

I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of all my older
Mac stuff and buying one of the last/fastest models
of Beige G3 so I can install OSX, gaudy GUI and all.

Does OSX have built in backup for critical System
components like Windows XP? Absolutely every time I'm
about to do something with OS blowing up potential,
I set a System Restore point and it's saved a ton
of work many times. Worst case is I have to boot to
Safe Mode then restore from the restore point.

With Mac OS any "bomb proofing" has to be done
manually and to be 100% sure of recovery the entire
System Folder has to be copied and stored off the
Mac. Just drop in the wrong extention or wrong
combination of extentions and *foom*. Then you can't
tell exactly what got corrupted if it won't boot.

Mac OS can be very stable, but for the die hard
tinkerer and tweaker, getting to an optimal setup
is a road filled with Bombs. ;) (And error numbers
nobody has ever heard of.)
