The repair man returned our iMac to-day. The firm which repaired it is
called "Equinox Computer Maintainance" who presumably work for "Mastercare"
as promoted by PC World. The man came last Tuesday the day after we
phoned, and to-day is Monday, so I suppose you could call it quick service.

I said to the man perhaps "we had better check it before you go". The
machine powered up okay, but the screen was too bright, and could not be
adjusted in the "sound and monitors" control panel. I signed the piece of
paper which said "equipment is to my satisfaction" and put "except for
brightness problem". I decided to keep the machine rather than have the
man take it away again!

Okay, so what do you do when your iMac screen is too bright? Answer: take
the cover off and adjust the control inside. There are two controls, one
marked "focus" and the other marked "screen". If you turn the "focus", it
makes the screen go blurred. Careful adjustment is needed to get the
display crisp. The brighness control, marked "screen" is similarly very
delicate, and I reckon the repair man had accidently moved it a fraction.

Taking the iMac apart is very tricky. I have the Bondi Blue tray loading
Model. You have to proceed as follows with this model:-

1. Remove the processor by following the instructions given in the "help
centre" about dismantling the machine for upgrading RAM, replacing the
battery etc.

2. As you dismantle the machine, note carefully which screws belong where:
Some screws are very similar in size, but do not fit unless you put them
back in their original holes.

3. Turn the machine upside down and remove the bottom panel by releasing
the two tabs underneath the machine and pushing. Just a push fit. Hairy,
but easy. There are two screws to remove at the front of the machine, below
the screen. At the top of the machine are two tabs, either side where the
clear plastic case joins the front. Remove these tabs to reveal two screws.
There are six screws to remove underneath the machine. The clear plastic at
the back lifts up. It has "L" shaped tabs which fit into the front part of
the case. The front part of the case is just a push fit - you can prise it
apart with your finger nails.

4. Put the processor back, and connect everything up, then you can power up
the machine and make adjustments. You can use the "calibration" tool to set
the gamma.

5. Do not touch anything whatsoever inside the machine while it on. It is
safe simply to adjust the brightness control with a screwdriver with an
insulated handle.

6. Disconnect the power lead completely from the machine before removing
the processor again.

6. Re-assembly is easier than taking the machine apart, but be careful all
tabs are correctly in place before pushing the case together. If any of the
tabs are not correcly in place, then there is a risk of breaking them off.
