I have a PM 9600 and A CW Boston clone. Now for what I am about to tell you
all, it is important to keep in mind the fact that the Boston clone is
actually a clone of the Starmax 4000 / 5000.

I saw an ad for a sonnet G3/400/1mb processor upgrade card at the website of
computers unlimited. It looked cheap at 190 or so (I have seen them at over
200).

Thinking I have a good deal here I rushed off to Computers unlimited up in
Colindale and to my surprise what had been advertised as G3/400/1mb PCI
turned out to be a G3/400/1mb L2. The L2 version is for upgrading the
processor via the secondary cache slot of Macs without a processor slot.

Thinking well it should work in my Boston clone (since that is a clone of
the Starmax - which itself is a clone of the PM 4400) I bought the
G3/400/1mb L2 and tried on my Boston. IT did not work. I tried everything I
knew about Macs - zilch, nyet, zero nothing. So I emailed Sonnet support who
then told me their upgrade card works with clones except the STARMAX
4000/5000 series!

So I am stuck with a fast upgrade card which will not work in my 9600 nor my
Boston. However Sonnet kindly have decided to replace the card with a new
boxed G3/400/1mb L2 so I can sell it and try to recoup some of my money.

I have just sent off the card I tried and I am waiting for the new boxed one
to arrive. It will come at the end of next week and if there is anyone with
Powermac 4400 etc or Perfomas or clones other than Starmax, I am willing to
trade the card for a G3/400/1mb PCI (Sonnet now sells the PCI version for
only $150!) make me an offer.

I have all the documentation and the emails between me and Sonnet. (some
emails went all the way to Japan!)
