Thanks for your responses guys!  I have allready tried the scanner with a 
12V adaptor which was the largest that I could find at the time - powered
the scanner up but everything that scanned had green and red lines going
through it.    I went to my local Maplin's a few days ago but they had 15V
or 18V adaptors and couldn't find anything in their catalogue that would do.
The guy said that he would be wary using the 15V, but I'm not sure if it's
worth a try just to see if it'll work.

Went to the secondhand shop too but they didn't have any.  The only idea I
can think of is trying to buy a knackered scanner on eBay that would have
the adaptor with it?!
