Quicktime is made out of a whole bunch of extensions, a real pain to find out which one is causing the problem. I suggest that you chuck all of em away and re-install quicktime. It's a free download or to be found on your Mac OS CD...

What Mac do you have? Would it not be wise to upgrade to a 9.x system, or even OSX if you'r mac can handle it.

After I start my Mac (OS 8.6) the desktop loads and then I get an alert

I've updated the software but still gets the message.

Any advice as to how to switch this irritation message off will be
gratefully received.
