This makes me wonder if it is not the "drip tray" problem which I 
gather should prompt a service fault when it becomes saturated.  
Although I have not experienced this personally with either of my Epson 
printers I gather it is a notorious problem which causes much anxiety 
when the printer stops working for no obvious reason. Have you tried 
talking to Epson?
