The problem is that the tracks in an AVI file (Video and Audio) can be encoded using a range of codecs, some of which are available for the Macintosh, and some which aren�t. Some are available as optional installs, which further complicates things. QuickTime is similar, in that it is a modular standard supporting a range of codecs, but it seems that this sort of problem is less common with QT.
Try going to versiontracker and searching on AVI � there�s a range of utilities available and depending on your requirements one may do the job for you. There will probably be a bit of trial and error involved before you find the one that does exactly the job you need.
