Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions. I managed to get QuickTimePro 6.0.3 to open and play the file and then save/export it to an AIFF simply by using File Lift 4.1.1 to change the creator code of the m4a file to "TVOD" and the file type to "mpg4". Bingo - Success :-)
