Hi Steve,
Unfortunately posters to Apples discussion area aren't technicians,
I did not say I got my information from the Apple discussion board. I got it from several sources, including the following:
The power supply could have failed, but that's rare. More common is the
flyback transformer on the analog board failing. One fault symptom is that
it fails, then shuts down the iMac. If then unplugged and left for 30
minutes, then plugged back in and restarted it just may run, but not for
long.
The above describes exactly what happened to me. It was stated by a certain Steve Bell, in the MacUK list...
My grievance with Scotsys is that I described the problem in exactly those terms and they failed to recognise what you yourself call a 'fault symptom' of a common problem.
You say that the problem relates only to tray loading and not to slot/loading iMacs. It is nonetheless quite curious to note that the symptoms are exactly the same and that the failure of my s/l iMac has been just as catastrophic. In its later stages, the iMac did shut itself off a couple of times also. Maybe it's the whole board that got fried up. The point remains that a stall at startup with green light on, grey screen and no spin up of the hard drive seems to be a sufficiently well-known symptom among support people. Scotsys should have said 'take it in immediately'. They didn't and I lost a computer.
Any AASP such as Scotsys only follow Apples guide lines, and Apple is very
strict over the warranty period. Only Apple themselves could have extended
the Applecare.
Indeed. My point is that given that it was Scotsys' failure to identify a known issue that made me miss the warranty expiry date, it was up to them to shoulder the repair costs. This they failed to do. I don't think it was unreasonable of me to ask this, given the circumstances. If you phone a car mechanic and say 'look my front wheel is wobbly, should I get worried' and he says 'no problem pal, drive on and don't you worry about it', well, I call that being irresponsible. That is exactly what Scotsys have done, it seems to me.
Check into your rights under the sale of goods act, 3 years is believed to
be too short a life for an iMac.
Steve Bell
I'll certainly put that point to my solicitor.
Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.
Walter
