The name �Apple Display Monitor� is not one that I recognise � can you check
to find out the exact name of the monitor, and if possible also the family
number? This begins with an M followed by four numbers, eg M1212 is the
number for the Macintosh Color Monitor, which incidentally can only work at
640x480.
If the monitor is a single-frequency model, then you will only have the one
resolution available. If you want to use different resolutions you will need
to get a multi-frequency monitor. Virtually any multi-frequency monitor will
work, but if you want to use the 7100�s built-in video port you will need an
adaptor if the monitor is a standard PC one.
A couple of clarifications � the 7100 can have one or two video ports
provided as standard. One is built-in to the motherboard and has relatively
low performance and resolution. The second is provided on a card which is
plugged into a special slot. This card provides higher performance and
resolutions. The card is not present on all systems (it was an option when
they were new), although most do have it. If the 7100 has been fitted with a
CPU upgrade this fits in the same slot, but some upgrades allowed for a
pass-through device which enabled the fitment of both the CPU upgrade and
the video card, although this was somewhat of a bodge.
Secondly, the standard video ports on the 7100 have 9 pins (in two rows).
The standard PC SVGA connector which is fitted to all PC CRT monitors has 15
pins in three rows. There are many sources of adaptors which convert between
the two, although things are slightly complicated (aren�t they always) by
the fact that the way in which the plug is wired tells the computer what
resolutions the display will support. The better adaptors have little
switches on them which allow you to set the adaptor up to tell the system
which resolutions are available on the monitor. Adaptors without switches
generally are set to a fixed setting which may or may not be appropriate for
the requirements of a particular Mac/Display combination.
Sorry the above is a bit involved, but that, unfortunately, is the way it
is!

Can someone please help me with the following two problems?
1. I have a 7200/90 with an Apple Display Monitor, with only
one resolution, 640 x 480, 67HZ. There is no choice. I recently downloaded
Sigma Chess but cannot play it on this monitor for it requires a higher
resolution 800 x 600. Is it possible to increase the resolution preferrably
with some software.
2. My modem is connected to the serial port. How can I add more devices
without discoennecting the modem? Is it possible to create usb support.
