Not sure what an sw printer is!! The only sw that I can think of stands for
software, which cant be right...

The printer connected to your PowerBook G3 will only be made available via
AppleTalk if you have AppleTalk switched on for the ethernet port in the
Network prefs pane is this the case? You may want to try connecting to the
printer using Rendezvous, which is OS Xs native discovery protocol in
other words, the way in which the printer is advertised as available on the
network. Rendezvous is essentially always switched on.

One things for sure, however in principle theres absolutely no
difference between two computers connected directly together using a direct
ethernet cable or if theres a hub between them. As far as the two computers
are concerned they can just connect with each other via ethernet, whether
theres a hub between them or not.

The only caveat to that is that sometimes it is possible for a hub (or
switch) to interfere with the connection for example I have heard of
certain switches not properly passing AppleTalk packets through, even though
in principle they shouldnt be doing anything to the packets on the way
through, just routing them to the appropriate port.

It would be great if you could provide some feedback to the list on your
experiences with this sometimes when I post things to the list we never
hear anything further and I dont know whether the problem was solved or
not! Im not pointing any fingers just a general comment...

Subject: SW printer OS9 G3 sharedd with OS X G4 and ethernet

i I tried to share an sw printer on a g3 wallstreet OS9 with my g4 imac OS
Jaguar.

The Print Centre Preferences/Add/Appletalk/Local Appletalk zone fails to ,
mount the printer, which is set to shared status on the g3, Chooser.

My two computers are connected via ethernet, and shared files, without a
hub.
If I were to use an ethernet hub, would this enable the printer sharing?

I am aware that the SW printer is not supported in Jaguar, but I believe it
should be able to share it.
