Actually, I'm not sure I've done much from the mac. Like you I've also got a Windows machine (Win2K) and I certainly use the command line on that.
I imagine that I'd use terminal on the Mac. Or where there's a URL (eg, ftp://ftp.foobar.com) you can set if off via a click on that URL in Safari; thereafter download seems to take over.
