Hmmm ... First of all, 2/3 rds of a bottle of merlot is missing in action,
so I might not be so swift but anyway here's my 2 bob's worth ....

Logging in as 'root' could be an idea, also there's a nifty utility called
File Buddy (search for it on http://www.versiontracker.com) ... Or even
simpler, use the Disk Utility to repair your permissions ... In fact ... Do
that first.
