A Linux box is the zone of alpha grade UNIX experts (note I avoided the word 'geeks' ;-) ) and they are thin on the ground. A lot of lower grade IT specialists in the world (myself included) operate 2 steps ahead of the user and as such learn the system as they work on it, OS X Server is a long way ahead of bog standard UNIX flavor stuff in ease of setup/maintenance terms. You buy the box, load on the OS and it's there ready to do everything a server should, and you can set it all up via a GUI. With Linux/BSD systems hacking is required to get anywhere, and fine if your good at it all power to your elbow, but a lot of us haven't got a scooby-doo. It's hard to learn under the pressure of demand but at least you are th9ose 2 steps in front if you have OS X server on your side...
I agree with you. I have lost count of the number of times I have determined to 'really learn Linux', yet ended up beaten. Most recently with Yellow Dog 3 on an iBook.... But there are those who can make them dance the tango! I get a feeling that it's getting easier: the latest versions of the leading distributions install mpre easily, and the key apps - say, Apache, Tomcat, MySQL - are also ever-easier to install and configure. But it does require a fair degree of command-line knowledge.
