I think another issue is the loose definition of 'spyware'. You could
argue that (PC) programs such as MacAfee's auto-updater is spyware; it
checks a remote site at regular intervals, checks the status of your
accounts, and it appropriate will download and install fresh versions
of its own datafile. OK, in that case it's benign (I hope...) but it
probably meets the definition of spyware. Or Skype, the VOIP program.
