I have to admit that my 4400 ran for 3 years on a pram battery made by taping 3 standard AA's together. And they weren't even new, or alkaline, just what was kicking round my desk drawer.
I just couldn't bring myself to pay 6 for a battery. So I just cut the wires and taped them to the AA's. Then wedged them down the side of the disk bracket with a bit more tape.
After all, 4.5 volts is 4.5 volts . . .
I know its not 'right'. But it worked perfectly well. In fact I think it is still fine - but I dont know as I abandoned the machine when we moved house.

PS, check your voltage before you try this, perhaps it was only 2 AA's at 3 v? can't remember, it was ages ago. -- The VidaVerde Seed Collection 14 Southdown Avenue, Lewes East Sussex, BN7 1EL
