I can understand the security implications, but it would be so useful if home networks could be saved so that all one needs to do is just turn Airport on from the menubar and start exchanging data across the home network.
I guess you're using ad-hoc networking rather than having a base station? Having an Airport or other wireless base station would mean there was a permanent network presence.

Why not get an Airport Express? For �100 this should let you use any USB enabled printer wirelessly, and gives you a base station too.
Then, when you move to broadband, it would give you a secure way to share the internet connection.
I'm not sure about the filesharing whilst dialed up - I rely on being behind a NAT router to stop any form of inbound hacking problems.
